Disney Movie Club: Mickey Mouse

The most popular animated character of all-time is undoubtedly Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse is the creation of Walt Disney with the help of fellow animator Ub Iwerks. While he was originally nothing more than a cartoon character, he has become one of the most recognized symbols in the world. How did this astounding character come to be?

Walt Disney had already achieved a certain amount of success with his character "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit." However, his distributor swindled the rights to the character and hired away most of Disney's staff. After meeting his contractual obligations with Oswald, Disney experimented with a number of different animals including a horse, cow, and frog. A new character was on the horizon. When Walt was a boy in Missouri, he had a pet mouse. His love for this mouse would finally inspire one of the greatest animated characters of all time. He asked Iwerks to come up with some sketches of a lovable little mouse and the initial drafts called the loveable mouse "Mortimer Mouse." Luckily his wife talked him out of the idea and they came up with the idea of "Mickey."

Mickey Mouse was first seen in a short movie called "Plane Crazy." In this movie, Mickey fancies himself an aviator. He and Minnie take a flight during which Minnie parachutes from. Mickey eventually crashes the plane. The short received mixed reviews and did not fare as well as Disney had hoped.

Steamboat Willie Video cover<<< Mickey eventually broke through with the movie "Steamboat Willie." This was generally credited as Mickey's official debut. The reason behind this is that this feature actually got picked up by a distributor, while the previous Mickey shorts did not. While this wasn't the first cartoon to have sound, it was the first one to synchronize the sound with the action. It is interesting to note that Disney personally performed the voices for Mickey and Minnie.

The path to becoming a worldwide icon was set. Disney capitalized on Mickey's popularity by putting his likeness on everything from lunch boxes to movie cases. Presently, those big black ears are recognized by practically anyone. In recent years, his regard has continued with children as a result of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cartoon and similar shows. As each generation introduces him to the next, the appeal of Mickey Mouse knows no bounds.

Mickey Mouse can be seen in a number of loved movies and cartoons. If you would like to introduce your family to his hilarious antics, enroll in the Disney Movie Club today. You can have classics like "Fantasia" delivered right to your door. Share the magic tonight!

Mimicking Disney characters with ever-popular Disney costumes

Children and Walt Disney characters share an inexplicable bond, with the magnetic charm of the Disney characters drawing children towards them from all over the world. This article provides information on some of the more popular Disney costumes available that give some exciting choices this Halloween.

Children and Walt Disney characters share an inexplicable bond, with the magnetic charm of the Disney characters drawing children towards them from all over the world. These interesting characters, with wonderful tales surrounding each one of them, unfailingly ignite the fancy of the young, the strongest complement to the imagination that has created such endearing characters.

Not surprising then that children of all ages love to dress up in various Disney characters and be like them be it Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Mickey Mouse. No childrens' party is truly complete with kids dressed up in costumes of at least some Disney characters, as the opportunity to dress up like some of their favorite comic book and animation characters is simply irresistible for kids. Children love parties, particularly theme parties, not just for the chocolates and cakes, but also to see and enjoy their beloved characters dressed up in their costumes. If chocolates bring a smile on the faces of children, colorful costumes bring forth their unadulterated joy and playfulness. Isn't seeing a happy, playful child a joy to behold!

It is amazing how some characters just capture a child's heart. Just ask a little girl about her Barbie doll. Similarly, the fairy tale of Cinderella holds untold appeal, even amongst kids who are probably not old enough to understand the intricacies of the tale. Cinderella costumes, which accentuate the beauty, simplicity and sincerity of this famous Disney character, are an all-time favorite.

Children, particularly girls, are simply fascinated by the idea of mermaids and princesses. May be it has to do with images of beauty and elegance that flash across, the moment we talk of a mermaid. Ariel the little mermaid princess is truly a character made for fantasies; which girl wouldn't love to step into the long dressy gown that forms part of the mermaid's costume?

Another favorite among kids is the Belle Princess costume from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The story of this beautiful woman held hostage by a monster holds special appeal. When Disney released this animated feature almost 15 years ago, it grossed over $330 million in revenues at the box office worldwide. No wonder then that every Halloween, the Belle Princess costume is in high demand; the magical appeal of some fairy tales just lingers on forever.

Last, but certainly not the least, an all time favorite costume amongst children is that of Mickey Mouse, a character almost as recognizable worldwide as the golden arches of McDonald's.

So, let the kids make merry in their cute childrens' costume, masquerading as characters that they read and dream about everyday.

Hidden Mickeys
by: Craig Shipman

What do you mean hidden Mickey's, how can a six-foot tall mouse be hidden?

Well, as if Walt Disney and his imaginers didn't give us enough to look at when we visit their wonderful parks, they also had a little inside joke running.

Hidden Mickey's were always meant to be just that, hidden. They were originally placed in certain attractions by the imaginers so they could show their friends and family that they actually did work on that attraction, it became their little secret, a kind of signature only to shared with a select few. But now the secret is out.

hidden mickey silhouetteStill baffled as to what a Hidden Mickey is?

Firstly, to make things a little more interesting, there are two main types of Hidden Mickey's. The first type, and the original, is the most obvious, and consists of three circles, one large circle with two smaller circles placed above and to either side of the larger circle to give the famous Mickey Mouse silhouette. The second type of Hidden Mickey is sometimes slightly harder to see, taking the form of a side profile of the great Mouse, thing side profile of Hitchcock at the start of his movies and you will get the idea.

So where are these Hidden Mickey's?

Well this is the fun part. You have to find them yourself. If you have never visited any of the Disney parks then we are sure that when you do make your first trip the last thing you will be thinking about is Hidden Mickey's, but, if like us you have visited several times, you can consider the Hidden Mickey's as a new challenge, something else to do other than standing in line for Test Track (by the way, we know of at least two Hidden Mickey's in the queue area for Test Track!).

There are books out there to help you, all unofficial of course, and we are sure that you have seen people running around with the books, or looking behind them on an attraction instead of straight ahead like everyone else, well these people are probably looking for a Hidden Mickey, it might even be us. Some people dedicate an entire visit to the parks just to looking for Hidden Mickey's. It is great fun!!

Want to know where to start?

Well first of all, if it isn't hidden then it isn't a Hidden Mickey, for example Mickey shaped ice cream cookies are not Hidden Mickey's. And not every set of three round objects are Hidden Mickey's, like oranges in a fruit bowl, they are just oranges. Also, if it is very obscure, such that you need to tilt your head to one side and squint with both eyes to see it, then it's not a Hidden Mickey.

I will give you one to get you started. In Walt Disney Worlds magic Kingdom, on the Haunted Mansion, as you are passing through the ballroom scene with all the ghosts, take a look at the big table. Pay special attention to the place setting on the far left bottom corner. You will see that two saucers have been placed along with a dinner plate to form a great Hidden Mickey . Have a look the next time you are there. Although this is not an official Disney Imaginer Hidden Mickey, the cast members working Haunted Mansion reproduce it when the Imaginers reset the attraction.

Don't forget that Hidden Mickey's can take any form. Another quick example would be at Disney/MGM Studios, in the Tower of Terror. Watch the video with the family closely and you will see that the small girl is carrying a plush Mickey Mouse.

Have a look next time you are in the parks, or if you see someone looking behind them on an attraction, ask them if it's a Hidden Mickey, they will love to share it, and that's what Disney is all about, having fun.

Discover The Sophisticated Side Of Mickey Mouse
by: Cara Goldsbury

DisneyWorld Photo Is it possible for sophisticated travelers to really enjoy themselves in the land of Mickey Mouse? Absolutely! Walt Disney World has undergone a transformation much like that of Las Vegas, with an abundance of fantastic themed resorts and sumptuous dining choices.

Maybe your image of Disney is of lackluster, motel-style accommodations. Not so! All deluxe property choices are unique and offer that special Disney touch. You'll find them to be adorned with impressive lobbies, painstakingly landscaped grounds, first-rate restaurants, elaborately themed pools, and gracious accommodations. All offer top-notch recreational facilities and services. In fact, each resort is so marvelous it can be difficult to choose which fantasy you wish to indulge.

Let me tell you about my favorites:

Disney's flagship resort, The Grand Floridian, with its red-gabled roofs and Victorian elegance, draws inspiration from the grand Florida seaside 'palace hotels' of 19th-century America's Gilded Age. Just a short monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom, it spreads along the shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon with spectacular views of Cinderella's Castle and the Wishes fireworks display. Aquatic enticements include a crescent white sand beach dotted with brightly striped, canopied lounge chairs, a large sophisticated pool in the central courtyard, a new beachside Florida springs-style pool, and a classy marina sporting a wide assortment of watercraft. A full service health club and spa, tennis courts, five restaurants, two lounges, and sophisticated shopping round out the list of exceptional offerings.

A navy blue blazer should be in order for a stay at Disney's Yacht Club where guests find the sophisticated ambience of a posh Eastern seaboard hotel of the 1880s. Fronting Crescent Lake and a sliver of beach that stretches over to the adjoining Beach Club Resort, it's just a short stroll to Epcot's International Gateway entrance and only a boat ride away to Disney-MGM Studios. Best of all is the Yacht Club's 3-acre mini-water park complex, Stormalong Bay, offering sandy bottom pools, a giant 'shipwreck' waterslide, a tidal whirlpool, bubbling hot tubs, a kiddie pool with its own slide next to the beach, and enough length to float lazily in inner tubes to your heart's content.

The Animal Kingdom Lodge is a stunning celebration of African wildlife, culture, cuisine, and art. Its authentic architecture and 33 acres of grasslands filled with hundreds of roaming, exotic animals is simply a stroke of genius. The six-story, horseshoe-shaped structure is surrounded by a landscape of golden boulders, tall bamboo, yellow flame trees, pampas grass, copperpod trees, and date palms. In it's imposing, 5-story, thatched roof lobby are massive chandeliers formed by resplendent Masai shields, a large mud fireplace, and handsome safari-chic seating. From common lookouts as well as from 90% of the guestrooms are wonderful views of playful zebra, lanky giraffe, sprite gazelle, huge ankole cattle, herds of wildebeest, flocks of exotic birds, and more, with over 200 animals in all.

Last but not least is The Wilderness Lodge, Disney's dramatic depiction of an early 1900s national park resort. I challenge you to keep your jaw from dropping open on your first encounter with its awesome eight-story lobby of ponderosa pine logs, a massive 82-foot tall fireplace, and authentic 55-foot Pacific Northwest totem poles. Outside is a breathtaking scene of sparkling waterfalls, rushing creeks, and towering pines. The sound of crickets is heard beneath the bridges and along the meandering pathways lined with natural grasses, junipers, and wildflowers. And on the shores of Bay Lake is Wilderness Lodge's very own erupting geyser surrounded by a steaming expanse of geothermal activity.

What about Disney's dining choices? Once just a hot dog and hamburger haven, Disney's reputation for dreadful theme park food is now a thing of the past. Think Pan Roasted Striped Bass with Aromatic Rock Shrimp Lemongrass Risotto, 6-Hour Braised Veal Shank with Orzo Pasta and Soy Glaze, or Cornbread Stuffed Quail with Foie Gras and Sauce Maltaise. Just a mere sampling of the incredible meals to be found at many of the over 270 dining spots on Disney property. In a radical culinary transformation Disney hired top-notch chefs to create exciting menus for some of the highest rated restaurants in the country and first-rate sommeliers to fashion outstanding wine lists.

Here are some of Disney's best restaurants:

The California Grill on the 15th floor of Disney's Contemporary Resort offers an unbeatable panorama of the Magic Kingdom and the Seven Seas Lagoon along with picture-perfect views of the Wishes fireworks. From pristinely fresh sushi to exceptional New American Cuisine to sensational desserts and an outstanding California wine list, this place has it all. Don't be discouraged if all the coveted window seats are taken; an adjoining observation platform offers a bird's-eye view of the fireworks extravaganza.

For top-notch and innovative seafood specialties, head to the Flying Fish at Disney's Boardwalk where entrees such as Potato Wrapped Florida Red Snapper with a Creamy Leek Fondue are the norm. Contemporary and trendy, yet whimsical, this restaurant will absolutely delight the senses with its festive room of flying fish mobiles, sea blue sparkling mosaic floors, and golden fish scale pillars. Named a 2003 Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winner, it boasts an excellent international list. Don't forget to save room for the unforgettable desserts, in particular the banana napoleon with warm caramel sauce.

Fine dining in a sophisticated setting combined with virtually flawless service sets Victoria and Albert's in Disney's Grand Floridian Resort apart. Here in this AAA Five-Diamond awarded restaurant you're served a sumptuous seven-course meal on white linen set with Royal Doulton china and sparkling crystal. Those seeking a special evening should book the newly-remodeled, 6-person chef's table found in a candle-lit alcove in the kitchen, a spot perfect for an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at Disney's top chef in action.

Epcot's Bistro de Paris is a charming Belle poque dining room with an air of exclusivity. Filled with gilded mirrors and crimson banquettes, its billowy white drapes frame windows that overlook the World Showcase Lagoon. Servers with delicious French accents roll out sensational dishes prepared with only the freshest ingredients. After dinner enjoy a dessert of crepes prepared and flamed tableside while lingering over cordials and coffee in anticipation of the Illuminations spectacle.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge's premier dining room is the seductive Jiko where floor to ceiling windows look out on a boulder-strewn creek. Twin clay ovens draw the eye to the open kitchen where an eclectic blend of creations prepared with African flair are turned out in exotic presentations. Accompany your meal with a selection from the all South African wine list, the largest in North America. And don't leave without ordering the incredible dark chocolate filled beggar's purses served with a honey dipping sauce, one of Disney's best desserts.

So, for those who think that Walt Disney World is just for kids, think again! It's a world of fantastic resorts and innovative dining just waiting to be explored. You may never even make it to the parks.

Baby Clothes By Disney
by: Kirsten Hawkins

Disney and children go together like milk and crackers. Its just a given that in almost any American household where children reside there is something in the home that was made by, produced by, licensed by, or endorsed by Disney.

Because of this natural affinity that Disney and kids seem to have, the Disney Corporation has been making clothing for children for nearly as long as they've been in business. This form of licensing and merchandising took off to new levels when George Lucas proved that there was money in movie licensing tie-ins with Star Wars in 1977. Today when a Disney movie is released there are kids' and babies' clothing items bearing the likenesses of the main characters faster than a parent can say Bambi. While some Disney titles are hit or miss these days (compare the numbers for Home on the Range with those for Finding Nemo) there are titles that seemed to strike a chord with kids and parents alike and the company still sells massive amounts of children's, toddlers', and babies' clothing related to those films.

The Little Mermaid

Even sixteen years after its release, kids and parents still love The Little Mermaid. Every little girl wants to be Arial (the titular mermaid) and their mothers don't mind helping them. Disney still sells t-shirts, swimsuits, and various other clothing items for babies and children with the film's motifs in droves.

Finding Nemo

One of Disney's most popular recent releases, Finding Nemo offers massive amounts of babies' clothing designs. Like Mermaid, the film's aquatic theme lends itself especially well to swimwear and summer wear for boys and girls alike. In fact, the first item listed when you enter the 'infants' page on Disney Direct, the company's web store, is a Finding Nemo one-piece swimsuit for girls.

Classic Characters

The more things change, the more they stay the same someone once said and he may have been on to something. Of all the Disney themed apparel for babies and toddlers, no items are more popular with the kids or their parents than those that bear the images of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and the lovable dog Pluto. These are baby clothing items that are unlikely to ever disappear and which are so popular that a child throwing a foam brick in the daycare center is likely to hit at least one kid with Mickey stenciled or printed somewhere on his or her clothing. Suffice to say that when you're choosing casual clothing for your little Mickey or Minnie Mouse, you can't go wrong with designs by Disney.

Walt Disney Picture

Walt Disney, one of the most notable figures in the field of entertainment. Know all about him through his timeline and life history.

He is one of the most prestigious people of the twentieth century. He is one of the very well known motion picture producers in the world. He won a record breaking fifty-nine nominations of the Academy Award and was honored with twenty-nine Oscars. Theme Parks in various countries and the very famous Disneyland have been named after him.

History of Walt Disney in Brief
We all know Walt Disney as a film producer and the co-founder of the Walt Disney Company. As a child he loved drawing. When he was in McKinley High School, he became the cartoonist of his school newspaper. After spending one year with Red Cross, he moved to Kansas City in pursuit of his career in the field of art. He married Lillian Bounds. In 1933, his wife gave birth to Diane Marie Disney. Walt adopted Sharon Mae Disney in 1934.

Apart form his Mickey Mouse; Donald Duck and others, 'Saludos Amigos' of 1942, 'Fun and Fancy Tree of 1947 and the 'Sleeping Beauty', were some of Disney's most noted creations. He was the man to conceptualize Disneyland. Most of his popular creations won him many prestigious awards and popularized his name in the world. His demise meant the loss of a great human being.

Timeline of Walt Disney
1901: Walt Disney was born on the 5th of December 1901. Elias Disney, his father, was an Irish Canadian and Flora Call Disney, his mother, was a German-American. Walt was one of the five children of Elias and Flora.

1910: The Disneys moved to Kansas City. Walt attended the Benton Grammar School, where he met Walter Pfeiffer. The Pfeiffers, who were theatre buffs, introduced Walt to the world of motion pictures. Walt began to love this new world.

1917: Walt's family migrated to Chicago. While in high school, Walt started taking courses at the Chicago Art Institute. He wanted to join the Army but was rejected, as he was only sixteen. Then Walt joined the Red Cross after which, he was sent to France. He worked as an ambulance driver there.

1920: In January, he along with the cartoonist, Ubbe Iwerks, established the Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists Company.

1923: Walt moved to Hollywood with a plan in his mind to become a director. In the October of the same year, Walt and his brother Roy sighed a contract with M.J. Winkler, a cartoon distributor in New York.

1925: Walt hired a young lady named Lillian Bounds as an inker. They ended up marrying each other during the same year.

1926: Disney renamed his studio. Now it would be called the Walt Disney Studio.

1927: The studio created the series Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mintz distribution acquired all the rights of 'Oswald'.

1928: Walt Disney's imagination gave birth to Mickey Mouse. The cartoons 'Plane Crazy' and 'Steamboat Willie' followed. In November 1928, the Colon Theater in New York showcased Steamboat Willie. It was the first animated cartoon with sound and gained a positive response from the audience. Walt Disney had become popular by this time with all the companies wanting the rights to Mickey Mouse.

1930: Disney signed a distribution contract with Columbia Pictures.

1932: 'Flowers and Trees', a Silly Symphonies cartoon done in Technicolor, won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject: Cartoons. Walt Disney owned the rights to use Technicolor. Disney received a special award for his Mickey Mouse during the same year.

1933: the cartoon called 'The Three Little Pigs' became a phenomenal success.

1934: In the cartoon, Orphan's Benefit, Donald Duck was introduced into the Mickey Mouse world. Donald Duck became the second most popular in Disney's creations.

1938: Snow White was released under a deal with RKO Radio Pictures. The film was a huge success and earned an amount of $8 million. Snow White brought in the Golden Age of Animation for Disney.

1940: During the late 1940s, Disney continued the work on 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Peter Pan' and commenced work on 'Cinderella'. He had been to Chicago in the late 1940s. There he sketched his ideas for an amusement park, deriving inspiration from the Children's Fairyland in Oakland, California. This idea was later expanded to design what is now known as Disneyland!

1949: The popularity of Donald Duck increased to a great extent and Donald replaced Mickey as Disney's star character.

1950: 'Treasure Island' and '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' were produced. 'One Hour In Wonderland' was featured on television.

1955: 'Mickey Mouse Club' became the first daily television show. On September 8, 1955, Disneyland was proud to welcome its one-millionth visitor!

1960: Walt Disney was the Head of Pageantry for the Winter Olympics of that year.

1964: 'Mary Poppins' became the most popular Disney film of the 1960s. It received nominations for 13 academic awards.

1966: On November 30, Disney was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital owing to his weakness. On December 15, Walt Disney died of lung cancer.

Today, the name Walt Disney is synonymous to creativity and innovation. He gave a new dimension to the cartoon and animation industry. He was truly a self-made man!

Walt Disney sent out his first corporate Christmas card in 1930. Very few examples of that card exist today. Another rarity is the Studio greeting card from 1931, an example of which was offered by Ted Hake earlier this month.
